Omeprazole in an oral paste for the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses.

Treatment Dose – 10 mL/500 kg BW (1.0 mg/kg BW) once daily for 2 to 4 weeks followed by daily maintenance dosing.
Maintenance Dose – 5 mL/500 kg BW (0.5 mg/kg BW) once daily while horses remain in training, or as directed by a veterinarian.

  • Always administer Gastropell Daily on a relatively empty stomach. Administer at least 30 minutes prior to feeding.

    the base of the tongue.

Enteric-Coated Omeprazole Oral Paste for Horses

Gastropell Daily contains enteric-coated omeprazole in an easy-to-administer oral paste for the the treatment and prevention of recurrence of Equine Gastric Squamous Ulcer Disease in horses.

Active Constituents

Omeprazole 50 mg/mL (oral paste)

Omeprazole is a dose-dependent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion. Clinical data indicates that Gastropell Daily reduces gastric acidity to a non-aggressive level, allowing existing ulcers to heal within two weeks of commencing treatment. Continued use at a reduced daily dose helps prevent recurrence.

Pack Size

Pack of 5 x 30 mL adjustable-dose syringes
(Each syringe provides approximately three daily doses for a 500 kg horse at treatment dose.)

How It Works

Omeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion by blocking the proton pump (acid pump) within the stomach lining.

Although administered orally, Gastropell Daily does not act directly on stomach fluid. The enteric coating allows the drug to pass through the stomach to the small intestine, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the acid-secreting cells of the stomach.

By dramatically reducing stomach acidity:

  • Existing ulcers can heal within approximately two weeks
  • Ongoing reduced dosing helps prevent recurrence
  • Gastric fluid becomes non-irritating to the stomach lining

Indications

Gastropell Daily is indicated for:

  • Treatment of gastric ulcers in horses
  • Prevention of gastric ulcer recurrence in horses in training

Why Performance Horses Are at Risk

The lower stomach has natural protective mechanisms against acid. However, the upper (squamous) region has limited protection and is vulnerable to acid exposure.

Risk factors include:

  • Stabling with only 2–3 feeds per day
  • Long periods without roughage intake
  • Intense training and exercise
  • Reduced stomach volume during exercise, causing acid splash

Without protection, acid exposure can lead to:

  • Spot lesions
  • Deep haemorrhaging ulcers
  • Recurrence within weeks if untreated

Daily acid suppression supports healing and helps maintain gastric health in horses undergoing regular training.

Dosage & Administration

For oral use only. Administer via syringe.
Always follow veterinary advice.

Foals

  • 2 mL per 100 kg bodyweight (1.0 mg/kg)
  • Once daily, as directed by a veterinarian

Adult Horses

Treatment Dose:

  • 10 mL per 500 kg bodyweight (1.0 mg/kg)
  • Once daily for two weeks
  • Follow with maintenance dosing

Maintenance Dose:

  • 5 mL per 500 kg bodyweight (0.5 mg/kg)
  • Once daily while horses remain in training
  • Or as directed by a veterinarian

Rapid healing may be associated with improvement in clinical signs within two weeks.

Without maintenance treatment, ulcers may recur within two weeks and can be as severe as before treatment. Daily reduced-dose maintenance has been shown to help prevent recurrence.

Tips for Best Results

  • Horses in training benefit from daily acid suppression when exposed to regular intense exercise.
  • Provide continuous access to roughage (hay) to stimulate chewing and saliva production.
  • Saliva helps naturally neutralise gastric acid.
  • Hay remains in the stomach longer than grain or concentrates, reducing empty stomach periods.
  • For more information on Gastric ulcers in horses, check out Dr Rebeccas article on Stomach ulcers in horses

The horse’s stomach produces acid continuously, but natural neutralisation only occurs when the horse is chewing.

Precautions

  • If used in performance animals, comply with regulations of the relevant authorities regarding medication.
  • Veterinary consultation should be sought prior to administering concurrently with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. phenylbutazone, flunixin)

Withholding Period

Horses must not be sold for slaughter during treatment or within 63 days of last treatment.

Racing/Event Withholding Period

If used in performance animals, observe the regulations of the relevant racing/event authorities.
